"I was drafted in the U.S. Army in October of 1944. My basic training was in Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Ord, California, and Fort Lewis, Washington. From there I went to Hawaii and on to Saipan and Okinawa, where I was in combat. From there I went to Cebu in the Philippines, where the Japanese surrendered to the 27th Division and the 77th Division, which I was part of. After the atomic bomb was dropped, we went for occupation in Japan. In April of 1946, I was back in the USA and was discharged from Camp McCoy, Wisconsin."
