WEIN, William "Sarge" Joseph
William Joseph "Sarge" Wein was born on November 21st 1924 to Albert & Bessy [Boney] Wein at Nett Lake, Minnesota.
Mr. Wein entered the U.S. Army on May 3rd 1943, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Home at entry: Nett Lake, Minnesota.
Mr. Wein served as a supply clerk with the 408th Airborne Quartermaster Battalion in New Guinea, Southern Philippines (Liberation) and Luzon. He was assigned to several ships during his service including the following:
- USS Hermatige (AP-54).
- USS San Diego (CL-53),
- USS Ranger (CV-4),
- USS Seahorse (SS-304)
- USS Wyoming (AG-17).
PFC Wein rose to the rank of a Private First Class. (PFC). He earned the following merits for his service:
- Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 bronze battle stars,
- World War II Victory Medal,
- Three overseas service bars,
- Parachutist badge,
- Bronze Arrowhead, -and-
- Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 bronze stars.
PFC Wein was honorably discharged on January 26th 1946, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
Mr. Wein died on October 28th 1972 at 48 years of age.
