VANCALBERGH, William Adolph
William Adolph Vancalbergh served in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He served in the U.S. Army beginning on January 4th 1945. He was assigned to the 249th Field Artillery Battalion, 27th Infantry Division. He boarded the USS Attala in Seattle in July 1945 and arrived in Okinawa in August.
In November 1945, he was assigned to Occupied Japan and worked on the division newspaper. He was transferred to the 27th Ordnance Company, 1st Cavalry Division, Camp Drake, on February 28th 1946. He left for the United States and arrived at Fort Lawton, Seattle, on September 27th 1946. He was discharged on November 24th 1946.
Mr. Vancalbergh was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), and two overseas bars.

William Adolph Vancalbergh was born on October 26th 1926 to Adolph & Mary [Deviemaker] Vancalbergh in Duluth, Minnesota.
He was inducted into the Army on January 4th 1945, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Home at entry: Duluth, Minneosta.
Mr. Vancalbergh served as a Technician Fifth Grade and clerk typist. He left Seattle in July 1945 aboard the USS Attala for Okinawa and arrived in August. He joined the 249th Field Artillery Battalion of the 27th Infantry Division.
In November 1945 he arrived in Japan and worked on the Division newspaper. On February 28th 1946, he was transferred to the 27th Ordnance Company of the 1st Cavalry Division at Camp Drake. He left the 4th Replacement Depot in September for the States to the song "Sentimental Journey." He arrived at Fort Lawton in Seattle on September 27th.
Tech5 Vancalbergh was awarded the the following medals:
- Good Conduct Medal,
- Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal,
- World War II Victory Medal,
- Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), - and -
- two overseas service bars.
He was honorably discharged November 24th 1946, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. After the war he married Doris Korby on June 3rd 1949 and they started a family.
