SWANSON, Walter Leon
Walter Leon Swanson was born on November 16th 1919 to Charles R. & Edith H. [Oberg] Swanson in Brimson, Minnesota.
Mr. Swanson was inducted into the Army on April 20th 1942, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Home at entry: Duluth, Minnesota.
He served as a Private First Class and clerk with Service Company of the 47th Armored Infantry Battalion in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe.
PFC Swanson received the following:
- Good Conduct Medal,
- European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 5 bronze battle stars,
- World War II Victory Medal, -and-
- three overseas service bars.
He was honorably discharged on October 14th 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
Mr. Swanson married on June 12th 1948 and started a family. He died on May 3rd 2001 in Duluth, Minnesota and is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Duluth.
