Walter A. Hanka of Ely, Minnesota, was inducted into the Army on May 4, 1942.
He served as a Technician 4th Grade and cook in the 34th Cavalry Reconnaissance Group in Rome-Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley, Italy.
Mr. Hanka was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle East Campaign Service Medal with three bronze battle stars, American Campaign Medal and three overseas service bars.
He was honorably discharged November 11, 1945 at Camp McCoy, Wis.
