Walter E. Mannila of Hibbing, Minnesota enlisted in the Army Air Corps on Oct. 2, 1942.
He was a Technical Sergeant and airplane flight chief with the 315th Troop Carrier Squadron, 443rd Troop Carrier Group in the China-Burma-India Theater.
He was awarded the: Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze battle stars, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and three overseas service bars.
He was discharged on Oct. 31, 1945 at Camp McCoy, Wis.
