Victor S. Ostlund received honorable discharged after five years of service for the Army.
After being inducted at Fort Snelling in March of 1941, he was trained at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. He served in the Field Artillery Unit at Fort Warren, Wyoming from June to December of 1941. Soon after being promoted to Corporal, Victor was again promoted to Sergeant.
After the Pearl Harbor incident, he was sent to Fort Lewis in Washington. Until January of 1943, he trained the new recruits as Staff Sergeant. In January he returned to Fort Sill to attend officer’s training school, and there he received commission as Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery.
Victor was eventually sent overseas in 1943 to New Caledonia in the South Pacific, then to the Fiji Islands, and finally to the Solomons where he entered active combat against the Japanese.
He was wounded in action in April of 1944, and spent five months in a hospital in Espiritu Santo Island. He was evacuated by the United States on September 1 and transferred to an Indiana hospital. He was promoted again to First Lieutenant.
Victor was decorated with the Asiatic-Pacific Theater ribbon with one battle star, the Pre-Pearl Harbor ribbon, the Victory ribbon, the American Theater ribbon, and the Purple Heart.
