Tony Carl Rich served during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
Mr. Rich served in the U.S. Navy. He enlisted on January 21, 1943, and trained at the naval training school at Camp Ward, Farragut, Idaho, as well as at Moffett Field, California. He served on the U.S.S. Remey in the South Pacific.
He was in Japanese territorial waters when the American atom bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and August 9, 1945, respectively. He was discharged on January 25, 1946. His rate was Seaman 1st Class.
He and his four brothers—Albert, Michael, Nicholas, and Patrick Rich—all served during the war.
Mr. Rich was born on March 2, 1924, in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of Nick, Sr., and Dora Rich. He graduated from Denfeld High School.
Before joining the service, he worked at a steel plant, and after the war he worked at Fraser Shipyards.
