Sulo M. Esala entered the Army on March 11, 1941 at Fort Snelling, Minn.
He served as a Technician 5th Grade with Headquarters Battery of the 957th Field Artillery Battalion of the 1st Army, VII Army Corps.
He recalls: "We were in the Spearhead for 337 days. I never missed a day! I was at Hell's Kitchen for six months, went to Scotland, was at the Landing at Normandy in France, went on to Belgium and Germany. At the end of the war we linked up with the Russians to take the displaced personnel to East Germany where Russians dispersed them to their respective countries."
Mr. Esala was awarded the European-African-Middle East Campaign Medal with five bronze battle stars.
He was honorably discharged Oct. 14, 1945 at Camp McCoy, Wis.
