Selby P. Hereid

Selby P. Hereid served during World War II in the European Theater.
He enlisted in 1940 (?) and entered the Army Air Corps in February 1942.
He attended aviation cadet training in the continental U.S. He was commissioned and served as a First Lieutenant and a navigator on B-17 Flying Fortress bombers with the 398th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, based in Northampton, England.
He flew three sorties during the Normandy invasion in June 1944. His plane was shot down on August 8, 1944, and he became a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft 1 in Barth, Germany. He was freed by Soviet troops in April 1945. He was discharged from the Army in December 1945.
Mr. Hereid was born on July 24, 1920. He graduated from Proctor High School in Proctor, Minnesota, in 1938. He died on July 21, 1995.
