JONES, Russell Bennett
Russell Bennett Jones was born on December 5th 1922 in Duluth, Minnesota to Ed & Ruth Jones, also of Duluth. He had two brothers.
Mr. Jones enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 21st 1942 at Ft. Snelling in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
He served as a Radio Operator aboard a B-24H Liberator, the "Fritzi". He served with the 458th Bomber Group, Heavy, 752nd Bomber Squadron. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSGT).
SSGT Jones died on March 23rd 1944. He was one of a 10 man crew that was on a bombing mission to Osnabruckon, Germany. They were hit by enemy flak, broke apart, and crashed southwest of Warendorf Westfallen, Germany.
The entire crew was interred there but were later repatriated to the US after the war to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery just south of St. Louis, Missouri.
