Rudy Monsaas of Duluth, Minnesota enlisted in the Army in September 1939.
He was a Staff Sergeant with the 125th Field Artillery, a Duluth-based Guard unit that was activated in 1941 and served in North Africa and Italy.
He said, "While our unit was north of Florence in Italy we captured an Italian opera singer who had collaborated with the Nazis. The U.S. troops had him sing for them for two or three days before we turned him over to authorities"
He was discharged on July 1, 1945.
