SODERSTROM, Roland Engvar

Roland Engvar Soderstrom was born on May 20th 1920 to David & Anna Soderstrom in Sweden. By 1940 he and his famiily were iving in Hibbing, Minnesota.

Mr. Soderstrom married Angie [Price] on January 3rd 1942. He entered the Army Air Corps on August 2nd 1942. He served as a Technical Sergeant with the 9th AAF Bomber Squadron, 7th Bomber Group in the China-Burma-India Theater during WWII.

SGT Soderstrom was reported as missing in action December 1st 1943. The B-24 and crew of 10 were listed as KIA based on eyewitness accounts. The crew roster had him listed as the Radio Operator.

They were part of a formation of B-24s on a bombing mission to Insein, Burma, near Rangoon. Fierce enemy opposition of anti-aircraft fire and fighter planes was encountered. Soderstrom's plane was shot down during the air battle. He was officially declared dead on February 4th 1946. 

The entire crew was group intered on September 23rd 1949 and honored with a headstone at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery near St. Louis, Missouri.
