Robert L. Kern graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1942 and enlisted in the Navy later that year.
He was selected for training as a pilot under the V-5 program and attended St. Olaf College, Yankton College and the University of Iowa before earning a commission and attending flight training in Pensacola, Fla. Kern served aboard the USS Saratoga and other ships.
After his Navy service, he graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and worked for Snyder Mining Co. and the University of Wisconsin-Superior before retiring in 1988.
