Robert Hein of Hermantown, Minnesota was drafted and sent to Fort Snelling when he had just turned 20 years old.
He was soon sent to aircraft school in Chicago for his exceptional mechanical ability. Upon finishing training, he went to England as a member of the Army Air Corps.
Robert worked at Huntington Base starting in the fall of 1943 and attended a gun sight school. Working with the 9th Depot Repair Squadron, a part of the 8th Air Force, he worked on the gun sights on B-17 and B-14 bomber planes.
In February of 1946, he was finally sent back to the States.
