KRAUSE, Robert George
Robert George Krause was born on June 9th 1921 to Fredrick John & Anna Mathilda [Bartholdi] Krause in Duluth, Minnesota.
Mr. Krause was inducted into the Army on February 10th 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota with Battery C, 125th Field Artillery Battalion of the Minnesota National Guard.
He left for Northern Ireland on April 30th 1942, as one of the first U.S. troops to reach the European Theater. He entered the combat area at Pichon in North Africa in December of 1942. He then left Africa in September, 1943 for Salerno, Italy.
He saw steady combat through Italy: at Volturno, Monte Cassino, and Anzio. Leaving Italy in May, 1944 for a United States rotation, he was assigned to Battery A, 805th Field Artillery in July, 1944.
He later left for the European Theater in January, 1945 and landed at LaHavre, France on February 7. He entered combat in Germany when the war ended.
He saw action in Tunisia, North Africa; Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno, Italy and Central Europe.
CPL Krause earned the following merits for his actions:
- Good Conduct Medal,
- European-African-Middle East Campaign Medal with 4 bronze battle stars,
- American Defense Service Medal,
- World War II Victory Medal, -and-
- five overseas service bars.
He was honorably discharged on June 22nd 1945 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.
Near the end of the war he returned home and married Mardell Vera [Carlson] on December 17th 1944. After the war they started a family. Mr. Krause died on February 6th 2003 in Duluth.
