Lt. Jr. grade Robert Baker began service in the Merchant Marines in January of 1942.
His many destinations included Honduras, Ethiopia, India, Capetown, Brazil, and the Suez.
He qualified for officer's school after 18 months of sea duty. Robert attended officer's school at Fort Trumble in Connecticut for 4 months. He taught in St. Petersburg, Florida for 2 1/2 months at the Maritime Academy. Among countless others, he was aboard a total of 6 trips through the Panama Canal.
His final trip was after the war loading aviation gasoline from Corpus Christi, Texas and carrying it to Belgium.
