Ray was born in Red Bank New Jersey in 1913, He joined the New Jersey National Guard 102nd CAV in 1931 and active Army in 1942. He trained at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Fort Riley, Kansas before going to Central and South America with the 760th MP BN. The 760th captured German and Japanese prisoners, and returned them to New Orleans via liberty ships.
From New Orleans, the prisoners were taken by train to different farm and factory camps in Texas where they worked for the duration of the war. After WWII and 13 years of service, he returned to his wife and children, and started a painting business with his brother Albert. Ray passed in 2002, at the age of 89.
