Raymond Mathew Syrjanen was born May 13th 1926 to Mathew & Aili (Nevala) Syrjanen in Embarrass Township, Minnesota.
Raymond enlisted in the U.S.Army on August 10th 1944 and served in World War II. Home at entry: Embarrass, Minnesota.
He served as a Corporal and rifleman with Company C of the 7th Infantry Regtiment of the 45th Infantry Division in Rhineland and Central Europe. His unit was present for the liberation of the Jews from Dachau. He rose to the rank of Corporal.
CPL Syrjanen was awarded the following for his service:
- Bronze Star Medal,
- Good Conduct Medal,
- Combat Infantryman Badge,
- European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign with 2 bronze campaign stars,
- World War II Victory Medal, -and-
- two overseas service bars.
He was honorably discharged December 2nd 1946. After the war he returned home and married Ethel C. Milbridge on April 11th 1946 and they started a family.
Raymond died on December 20th 2023
