Ray J. Hamski of Duluth, Minnesota, was inducted into the Naval Reserve in May, 1943.
He served aboard the duly commissioned destroyer-escort USS Solar (DE 221) in Philadelphia. and served 23 months escort duty mid-Atlantic and Mediterranean, stopping at North Africa, Italy.
"Concerning the USS Solar: Four months after my discharge crews unloading ammunition at the depot in Earle, N.J. a devastating explosion destroyed the ship with 7 fatalities and 108 injuries."
He was honorably discharged December, 1945 at Minneapolis, Minn.
