Norman H. Vollmer served in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He served with the U.S. Navy (Naval Air Force) from June 6, 1944, until June 18, 1946. He entered into active in Springfield, Illinois.
He attended boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Station, Illinois. He received flight training at the U.S. Air Base at Grosse Ile, Michigan. He was assigned to the U.S. Naval Air Station in Springfield, Illinois, and the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia. He received Naval Aviation Technical training in Norman, Oklahoma.
Mr. Vollmer was a member of several different units: Torpedo Squadron 97; Patrol Bombing Squadron 103; Hedron Fleet Air Wing 8; Headquarters Squadron, Fleet Air Wing 6; and Hedron Fleet Air Wing 4. He served aboard the USS White Plains and the USS Suwannee.
His rank was Fireman First Class V-6. He was decorated with the Victory Medal, American Area.
Mr. Vollmer was born in 1926 to Melvin E. Vollmer and Martha Bohrer in Mannhaven, Mercer County, North Dakota. He graduated from Marissa Township High School in 1944.
