Neil M. McNeil was inducted into Army June 18, 1941, Fort Snelling. Home at entry: Duluth, Minnesota.
He was a Technician 4th Grade, intercept operator, 3251st Signal Service Company: Tunisia (El Guitar), North Africa; Sicily (Palermo); Normandy (Omaha Beach, D-plus-1), Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns.
"Boarded LST June 7, 1944 for Utah Beach, Normandy. Instead we were sent to Omaha Beach as reinforcements. There, while attempting to land, LST alongside blew up and we spent most of the night rescuing survivors from the sea.
"On June 9 we proceeded down the coast to our original landing at Utah Beach where we joined the rest of the Company. On the10th of June we were at Ste. Mare Eglise and continued on through Europe. Left Leipzig, Germany for USA in May, 1945."
Mr. McNeil was awarded the: Meritorious Service Unit Citation. European-African-Middle East Campaign Service Medal with 7 bronze battle stars, American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and five overseas service bars.
Honorably discharged June 22, 1945, Fort Snelling.
