Morris Sommer was born and grew up in Rush City, Minnesota. He attended Rush City schools. After World War II he lived in Duluth, Minnesota from 1947-1953. Between 1953 and 1967 he lived near Grand Rapids, Minnesota. From 1967 until his death in 1981 he lived in Duluth. He married Bonnie C. Anderson in 1944. Morris and Bonnie Sommer had two children, Lawrence (Larry) and Susan.
Morris Sommer served in the US Army's 389th Quartermaster Truck Company, 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment from October 1942 to January 1946. He helped construct and trained as a ski trooper at Camp Hale, Colorado and served overseas at Kiska, Aleutian Islands, New Guinea and at Luzon and Leyte in the Philippines.
