Mr. Balke entered the Army on January 23, 1942, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Home at entry: Cook, Minnesota.

He served as a Private First Class and a gunner with Headquarters Battery of the 494th Coast Artillery Battalion (antiaircraft) in Normandy, Northern France.

He received the following: Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle East Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and six overseas service bars.

Mr. Balke was honorably discharged on October 12, 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
