Melvin C. Smith

Melvin C. Smith was inducted into the Army on June 8, 1943, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Home at entry: Hibbing, Minnesota.

He served as a Private First Class and carpenter with the 712th Railway Operating Battalion in Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe.

Mr. Smith shared the following: "In Nuremburg, Germany, I guarded and transported German prisoners to their own country."

Mr. Smith received the following: Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze battle stars, World War II Victory Medal, and three overseas service bars.

He was honorably discharged on January 15, 1946, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
