MAHONEY, John Philip

John Philip Mahoney was born in Duluth, Minnesota on September 8th 1917 to James Francis & Grace Esther [Sawyer] Mahoney. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1936.

Mr. Mahoney was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Forces in April 1942; serving in the European Theater during World War II,

After basic and advanced training, he was assigned to the 451st Bomb Group, where he served as a nose turret gunner on a B-24. He participated in the raid on Regensburg, Germany, on February 25th 1944, for which his unit received a Distinguished Unit Citation.

His B-24 was shot down during the mission, and he was captured. He was a P.O.W. from February 25th 1944, until April 29th 1945. His rank was Staff Sergeant (SSGT)

SGT Mahoney received the Purple Heart and the Air Medal for his service to the country. He was discharged in October 1945.

After the war, he returned home and married Delima Marie [Sauve] and they started a family. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. (DAV).

Mr. Mahoney died on March 23rd 2014 at the age of 96 years. He is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth
