He served as a Technician Fifth Grade and truck driver with Company C of the 76th Armored Medical Battalion in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He was wounded in action on September 2, 1944.
Mr. Takkunen was awarded the following: Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five bronze battle stars, World War II Victory Medal, and four overseas service bars.
He was honorably discharged October 1, 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
