John Leslie Coleman was inducted in to the Army at Fort Snelling, Minnesota on October 5, 1946.
He had basic training at Camp Polk, Louisiana. He was shipped overseas in late December from Fort Lawton, Washington and crossed the Pacific on the US Army transport ship Langfitt. He was a member of the 8th Army Medical Corps – stationed first at the 361st Station Hospital in Tokyo in occupied Japan where he worked as a clerk typist and as a chaplain’s assistant.One of his jobs was to play a portable organ for the Protestant Church Services.
He was then assigned to the 155th Station Hospital in Yokohama where he worked in the emergency room and on guard duty.
He was honorably discharged at 19 years of age from Camp Stoneman, California in March 1948.
