John "Jack" A. Koenig

John "Jack" A. Koenig served during World War II in the Pacific Theater in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He joined on December 9, 1941. He would have joined the Corps on December 8, but “the line was too long.” Mr. Koenig served with the 4th Marine Division (Air) in the Pacific Theater.

One of his milder adventures was greeting Eleanor Roosevelt when her plane landed on the wrong airstrip. After the war he moved to Duluth, Minnesota.

He was born on November 4, 1912, in Brooklyn, New York.

Before World War II, Mr. Koenig was briefly a member of the New York 101st Calvary, which drilled on horseback in Central Park, Manhattan.

Mr. Koenig died at the age of 95 on August 8, 2008, in Duluth, Minnesota.
