John E. Norland of Duluth, Minnesota was inducted into the Army on March 10, 1943.

He was a Private First Class and an anti-tank gun crewman in the Headquarters Company in the 1st Battalion 409th Infantry Regiment of the 103rd Infantry Division of the 7th Army. He served in Rhineland and Central Europe (Maginot and Siegfried Lines, 5th Army link-up at Brenner Pass). After the German surrender, he transferred to 3rd Army for occupation duty. He manned check points in the American Sector.

He received the: Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle East Campaign Service Medal with two bronze battle stars, Army of Occupation Service Medal (Germany), American Campaign Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and two overseas service bars.

He was discharged April 3, 1946.
