WHALEN, James John
James John Whalen was born on September 21st 1906 to John A. & Kathryn "Kattie" V. [Brennan] Whalen in Hibbing, Minnesota.
Mr. Whalen served three years in the U.S. Army from June 14th 1937, to August 14th 1939, serving as a Private (PVT).
PVT Whalen re-enlisted in the regular Army on June 14th, 1940, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He served as a medical technician with the 154th Station Hospital in Rome-Arno, Italy.
PVT Whalen earned the following merits for his service:
- American Defense Service Medal,
- European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 1 bronze battle star,
- World War II Victory Medal, -and-
- five overseas service bars.
PVT Whalen was honorably discharged on August 10th 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. He later served a third time in the Army from April 25th 1946, until his honorable discharge on May 31st 1958, at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
Mr. Whalen died on August 13th 1974 in Hibbing at 67 years of age. He is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.
