He served as a Seaman 2nd Class aboard the USS Kelinsmith (APD 134) in the Pacific theater and at continental United States stations.

Mr. Gilbert was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

He was honorably discharged August 20, 1946, at USN Air Station, Norfolk, VA.
