KALINOWSKI, Helen Marie

Helen Marie Kalinowski was born on June 21st 1916 to Christian S. & Louisa Anna [Bergrud] Knatterud in Spring Grove, Minnesota. She served in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps during World War II. Home at entry: Chisholm, Minnesota. She rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant (1LT)

LT Kalinowski recalled, "I was in the Army Nurse Corps during the war. I spent two years in England with the 305th Station Hospital. Our hospital was very near Bournemouth, which was a port in southern England. It was on the main road.

"The night before D-Day and all D-day the trucks went down the highway and the planes overhead. We all knew the invasion was near, but we didn't get patients until the next day. They made our hospital a "temporary transit hospital". The wounded came in and were examined. Those in not too great a need were termed "short care" and we kept them.

"The severely wounded were "long term" and were sent on to a general hospital. We all hoped that would be the "beginning of the end" but of course, it wasn't until the following May the war in Europe was over."

Ms. Kalinowski died on March 5th 2004 at 87 years of age. She is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Duluth, Minnesota.
