Hartley Elijah Toms was born on December 22nd 1909 to William & Matilda Toms in Negaunee, Michigan. By 1920 the family had moved to Chisholm, Minnesota.
Mr. Toms married Anne Helen [ ] Toms before he went off to serve his country. He entered the Army on August 11th 1943, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Home at entry: Chisholm, Minnesota. He rose to the rank of Corporal.
CPL Toms served as a clerk with Battery C of the 725th Field Artillery Battalion in Rhineland and Central Europe.
He was awarded the following:
- Good Conduct Medal,
- European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 bronze battle stars,
- World War II Victory Medal, -and-
- one overseas service bar.
CPL Toms was honorably discharged on October 21st 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After the war he returned home to Chisholm.
Mr. Toms died on February 5th 1984 at the age of 74 years old. He was buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing, Minnesota.
