Harold Gifford
Mr. Gifford served in World War II. He served stateside in northern Minnesota. He was part of the Minnesota State Guard, which was assigned to local sites in the state of Minnesota. He was assigned to Duluth, Minnesota.
Mr. Gifford's unit was housed at Jay Cooke Park outside of the city limits of Duluth, Minnesota, at an old Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp. Their headquarters was in a former candy factory in west Duluth.

Mr. Gifford spoke of the following; The Minnesota National Guard was sent to Alaska, so a Minnesota State Guard was created. I was part of it. I was assigned to service in Duluth, Minnesota. The Minnesota State Guard guarded local sites in Duluth; the aerial lift bridge, the power plant that powered the ore docks, the ore docks themselves and the Thompson Dam. Mr. Gifford's unit camped out at Jay Cooke Park at an old Civilian Conservation Corps Camp. Their main base was a former candy factory on West Michigan Street. They also used a roller rink in Two Harbors, Minnesota.
