Harold E. Korpela entered the Army on September 5, 1943, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.
He served as Private First Class and infantryman with the Headquarters Company of the Second Battalion and 351st Infantry Regiment in Normandy (D-plus-9, June 15, 1944), Northern France, Ardennes, and Rhineland. He was wounded in action during the Battle of Bulge on January 11, 1945.
Mr. Korpela was awarded the: Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze battle stars, World War II Victory Medal and two overseas service bars.
He received a disability discharge on August 7, 1945, at Schick General Hospital, Clinton, Iowa.
