Mr. Schyndel served as a Corporal and scout with the 381st Infantry Regiment of the 96th Infantry Division in the Southern Philippines (Liberation) and Ryukyu Islands. He was wounded in action on September 21, 1945, on Okinawa.
He was awarded the following: Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze battle stars, World War II Victory Medal, two overseas service bars, and Bronze Arrowhead.
Mr. Van Schyndal was honorably discharged on January 10, 1946, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
