He was honorably discharged on November 16, 1945, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.
From the Bronze Star Medal citation: "Although his destroyer had been hit directly five different times and was completely immobilized, Corporal Sundeen stuck to his post in the vehicle firing at fixed guns and advancing enemy infantry until all his ammunition was expended. Heavy artillery, mortar and small arms fire prevailed during the entire engagement. Dismounting the destroyer he aided in the recovery of a wounded infantryman..."
