George W. Flaim

George W. Flaim of Virginia, Minn enlisted in the Army Air Corps on Oct. 21, 1942 at Fort Snelling, Minn.
He served as a Private First Class and aircraft gunner on a B-25 bomber with the 85th Air Airdrome Squadron, in New Guinea, Ryukyu Islands (Ie Shima, Okinawa) and Luzon, Philippines.
He recalls: "Our B-25 bomber was shot down over the southern Philippines. We were credited with destroying 27 enemy aircraft on the ground. Direct war is hell but out of it came my love for St. Louis County and America."
Mr. Flaim was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, two Presidential Unit Citations, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze battle stars, American Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and three overseas service bars.
He was honorably discharged on Jan. 8,1946 at Camp McCoy, Wis.
