George Leroy Aune

George Leroy Aune, a native of Cook, Minnesota, entered service on February 4th 1944.
He trained at Camp White, Oregon and in San Luis Obispo, California before he became a scout for Company C, 383 Infantry Regiment, of the 96th Division of General Buckner’s 10th Army.
George did service in Leyte before going into action in Okinawa. During the engagement a combat correspondent reported that Aune was “the outstanding soldier of the day when he covered Aid men under fire while carrying out the wounded.” During his time in the South Pacific, it was reported he was always under fire and “in the thick of it.”
George’s parents, Mr. And Mrs. Louis Aune, received a telegram on June 21st 1945 reporting he had been seriously wounded on Okinawa on May 17th. Shortly after, they received information that their 19 year-old son had been killed in action.
