Eugene B. Johnson of Hibbing enlisted in the Army Air Corps Civilian Pilot Training program in 1942.
He qualified as a glider pilot, a flight engineer, an airplane and engine mechanic, and an instructor. In the air cadet training program he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant.
He was in the B-29 bomber transition training when the war ended.
He was honorably discharged from active duty on December 9, 1945 at Maxwell Field, Ala..
He remained in the US Air Force Reserve and retired as a Major.
