Erland W. Haapala of Virginia, Minnesota, was inducted into the Army on March 23, 1942 at Fort Snelling, Minn.
He served as a Private First Class with Cannon Company of the 32nd Infantry Regiment in the Aleutian Islands, Eastern U.S. Mandates, Southern Philippines and Ryukyu Islands.
Mr.Haapala was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with two bronze stars, and five overseas service bars.
He was honorably discharged November 18, 1945 at Camp McCoy, Wis.
