Source: Veterans’ Memorial Hall veteran history form; veteran’s account follows:
“I graduated from Central High School in Superior, Wisconsin in 1944 and left for the Navy one day later.
Basic training was in Great Lakes, IL, and I was eventually based at the Anti-Aircraft Training Center in Lake Bourne, LA. While in Lake Bourne, I processed new inductees (stenographer). There was constant aircraft flying overhead while troops were being trained on a variety of guns (large and small) on how to shoot down the enemy aircraft. This is where my hearing was damaged (there was no hearing protection). I also worked in the galley feeding the troops.
I don’t remember my date of separation but I was called back into service for the Korean War. I was sent back to Great Lakes, IL, where I was responsible for placing the calls – calling back service men and women for this war. Eventually, I was sent to Camp Wallace, Texas, where I served about an additional year and half before being discharged.”
