Elmer A. Wiinanen enlisted in the Army Air Corps as aviation cadet on April 10, 1942, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Home at entry: Iron, Minnesota.

He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant at Pampa, Texas, on May 24, 1943, and served as a pilot on the B-17 Flying Fortress combat replacement group.

He was grounded due to a hearing loss and assigned as an administrative officer of the 423rd Army Air Forces Base Unit in the continental U.S.

Mr. Wiinanen received the American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

He was relieved from active duty on March 1, 1946. at Lowry AFB, Denver, Colorado.
