Donald V. Rodby of Virginia, Minnesota was inducted into the Army on Oct. 20, 1942.
He was a Sergeant and supply technician with the Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, 25th Air Depot Group (B-29 bomber unit) in the Western Pacific.
He recalls, "Sent to Saipan where fighting was still going on. We were strafed and bombed every moonlight night for 9 months. Tinian was only a short distance away and we could watch the planes come and go. From our spot on Saipan we probably watched the plane take off with the A-bomb.After the war ended I was transferred to Guam."
Mr. Rodby received the: Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Service Unit Award, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Service Medal with 1 bronze battle star, American Campaign Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and 2 overseas service bars.
He was discharged on April 5, 1946.
