MONRIE, Donald Eugene

Donald Eugene Monroe was born on May 12th 1920 to Frank & Mabel [Rouse] Monroe of Hibbing, Minnesota. He graduated from Chisholm High School in 1939 andattended two years at Hibbing Junior College. 

Mr. Monroe entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on July 12th 1942. Home at entry: Chisholm, Minnesota. During leave on April 17th 1943 he married Violet May [Johnson] in Duluth, Minnesota and they started a family. 

He was an aircraft (propeller) mechanic with the 55th Service Squadron, 52nd Fighter Squadron (P-51 Mustangs) in Rome-Arno, Italy. He also served on Corsica servicing British Spitfire fighters. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSGT).

SGT Monroe earned the following merits for his service:

  • Good Conduct Medal,
  • European-African-Middle East Campaign Service Medal with 1 bronze battle star,
  • World War II Victory Medal,  -and-
  • three overseas service bars.

 

He was honorably discharged on October 26th 1945. After the war he returned home to his family.

Mr. Monroe died on December 14th 2010 at 90 years of age. He is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing, Minnesota.
