She served as a Specialist 3rd Class with the Naval Ammunition Depot in Crane, Indiana. "I felt it was a privilege and honor to serve my country."

She was awarded the American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

Ms. Zakula was honorably discharged on January 17, 1946, at Great Lakes, Illinois.
