THOMPSON, Clifford Melvin

Clifford Melvin Thompson was born on February 12th 1922 to Melvin Theodore & Sigrid Marie [Nyhein] Thompson in International Falls, Minnesota. The family moved to Duluth, minnesota.

Mr. Thompson enlisted in the US Naval Reserve and served as a Motor Machinist's Mate 2nd Class. He was assigned aboard the USS Savannah in the Italian Theater of WWII. 

He married Mildred Evelyn [Simonson]  on April 9th 1943 in Norfolk, Virginia.

MOMM2C Thompson was killed in action on September 11th 1943 when a German radio-controlled glide-bomb struck the USS Savannah. It caused extensive casualties aboard. He is honored at the Tablets of the Missing at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery. He was 21 years of age.

S1c Thompson was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is also honored with a memorial headstone at Ft Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
