Chester O. Wall entered the Navy on September 3, 1942, at Chicago, Illinois. Home at entry: Wallace, Michigan.
He served as a Boatswain's Mate 1st Class and LST operator aboard USS ALCYONE in North Africa, Sicily, Gilbert Islands, Philippine Islands.
He attended Great Lakes Naval Training station for basic. Shipped out of Norfolk, Virginia, aboard USS ALCYONE. On July 10, 1943, he participated in the Sicily invasion. Dozens of LST's were lowered over the side at 15 minute intervals. LST's transported men, weapons, and munitions.
Large waves laden with diesel fuel hit the LST and covered his head. Though temporarily blinded, he fought the pain to wipe out enough of his eyes to operate his craft to shore. Was the sixth or seventh LST to hit the beach in the midst of active fire. Participated in the Philippines invasion and liberation.
Mr. Wall was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars, World War II Victory Medal, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
He was honorably discharged December 17, 1945, at Great Lakes, Illinois.
