Austin J. Gangl entered the Army on June 1, 1943, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Home at entry: Nashwauk, Minnesota.
He served as a Staff Sergeant and armored auto mechanic with 126th Armored Ordnance Maintenance Battalion, 4th Armored Division in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe.
Attended basic training at Fort Knox, Kent. and then fourteen weeks of auto mechanics school. Departed New York on February 5, 1944, and arrived in England on February 18, 1944. Also served as an interpreter when German soldiers were captured.
Mr. Gangl was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army Distinguished Unit Badge, and three overseas service bars.
Mr. Gangl was honorably discharged on December 6, 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
